A filigree oval brooch of the Viking Age with an openwork motif in Borre Style.
The historical model for this oval brooch was found in the Norwegian province of Akershus near Oslo and dates back to the 9th century.
Handcrafted in high-quality bronze. Dimensions: 2 1/4" x 2" with a 1 1/2" pin. Eyelet at back allows a cord or chain to be connected so this piece can be worn as a pendant.
On the back is a stable spiral pin with latch - so this oval brooch is also suitable for a garment made of strong woollen fabric.
On the underside, the oval brooch is also equipped with a small eyelet in which a chain can be attached.
The oval brooch was an integral part of the Viking women's garments and was used to fasten the apron to the overdress when worn in pairs under the right and left shoulder.
In the period from 500 to 1000 AD, the oval brooch (also called bowl brooch, turtle brooch or tortoise brooch) was an indispensable part of the female costume in northern Europe. Therefore, oval brooches are quite often found in the women's graves of the Viking Age
