About the Myth

Long ago in Ireland, a boy named Fionn McCumhaill yearned for knowledge. His mother sent him to study with wise man Finnegas, who lived by a river. They saw a mystical salmon, said to hold all the knowledge of the world, swim by. Finnegas caught it and instructed Fionn to cook it, but not to taste it, as only the first person to do so would gain its knowledge.

Fionn inherits wisdom from the salmon as he presses down a blister from the fire. Fionn McCumhaill went on to be a great Irish hero, leading the legendary Fianna in their adventures across Ireland.

About the Artist

Handmade by internationally recognized Dublin artist, Aidan Breen, who has completed commissioned pieces for the National Museum of Ireland's permanent collection.
